James Madison’s Montpelier
Join us as we travel to scenic Orange County, VA to explore the magnificent lifelong residence of our fourth President of the United States, James Madison and his beloved wife, Dolley. Your fully guided tour of this architectural gem touches on a little bit of everything: Madison the man, The Constitution and Bill of Rights, Slavery- Madison’s worst regret and on Dolley Madison, America’s “First Lady.” Also, a special highlight of the day is a visit to Barboursville Ruins, former mansion of Governor James Barbour, preserved as a ruin after its destruction by fire in 1884. This is one of three residences designed by Thomas Jefferson, Barbour’s close friend. Today the estate is an award winning vineyard, where you will enjoy a tour and tasting of some of Virginia’s finest wines. There is a ten minute walk to the ruins. Dinner on the Grounds in Rocky Mount, VA
This delightful tour will have you laughing, singing, and most of all intrigued by the wonderful history associated with three of the town’s historic churches. Your step on guide from the Franklin County Historical Society will tell you true tales about the people who built and attended each church and the structural details that make the buildings so unique. Trinity Episcopal Church is known for their beautiful antique windows, Rocky Mount Presbyterian Church has an interesting history associated with the local resident “Blue Lady” ghost and colorful art glass windows. Rocky Mount United Methodist Church features a beautiful wall size altar mural and art glass windows. You will also be enlightened on how “Moonshine” has played an important role in the history of Franklin County. This trip promises to have many surprises along the way. You will definitely want to have your camera handy! Beliveau Farm Estate
This beautiful 165 acre farm tucked away in the picturesque Catawba Valley near Blacksburg, is home to not only a wonderful Bed and Breakfast, but the award winning Beliveau Winery. Also, every June the very popular Lavender Festival is held here at the farm and you will be able to experience the incredible sight and scent of fresh lavender! Joyce Beliveau’s passion is lavender and she will introduce you to this wonderful herbal plant with a delightful talk! She will also tell you the fascinating story of how her and her husband, Yvan’s dream came true in the purchase of Beliveau. Andrew Johnston House & The Palisades Restaurant
This beautiful Georgian style home located in Pearisburg, VA was built in 1829 by Colonel Andrew Johnston. This oldest surviving brick house in Giles County still boasts many of its original features including numerous pieces of Johnston’s family furniture. Your guided tour includes the house and the 1857 doctor’s office, which was occupied by Union soldiers during the Civil Way. Walk the beautiful grounds and browse in the Museum. Dinner is on your own at the Palisades Restaurant in Eggleston, VA. Located in the old Pyne’s General Store, which once was a vibrant business for many years, now is home to this upscale eatery known for its contemporary cuisine with a wide array of menu items.
