Bees, butterflies, and birds, oh my! Join us at Explore Park for a hike with our naturalist as we learn about native pollinators. After the hike, with the help of our Master Gardeners, we will learn how we can create pollinator friendly gardens and attract these wonderful visitors to our own backyards! Please bring water and wear closed-toe shoes. No strollers, please. Pre-registration is required. Program meets at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor's Center.

Father's Day Pun Hike
Is your refrigerator running? If so, then you might want to catch it! Invite Yoda out for dinner at your own risk. You will have to pay for his meal since he's always a little short! Come join us for a short walk with puns or Dad jokes galore. Bring your family, friends, or even jokes you have absorbed to explore trails and the cultural association of patriarchs with puns. (Psst, covering Dad's registraion fee might serve well as a last-minute Father's Day gift). All ages Welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required. In the Dirt
Do you find yourself wanting to learn about nature but aren't interested in taking a long hike? You need not travel far to enjoy and nature, it is right under your feet! Join us at Explore Park to explore the forest floor that is within your arms length, and sitting down is encouraged! Digging tools, sorting containers, magnifiers, field guides, and a stereo-scope are all available to assist in digging through and discovering what's in the forest detritus and dirt. You may even want to bring something to sit on. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Pre-registration is required. Group will meet at Explore Park's Journey's End parking lot.

Friday Morning Hikes
Get outside before the day gets too hot and take an easy going hike with a Naturalist. We will walk a different park each session and take time to explore and learn as we go. This program is geared for adults, but children are welcome to join! The Green Hill hike will meet at the trail head next to the softball fields. Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring a water bottle. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Pre-registration is required.

Nature Art
When you take the time to look carefully, you will see the sculptural elegance in a simple stick or the delicacy of an insect nibbled leaf. Take a walk and collect items from nature that catch your artistic eye, then create a unique piece of art. Colorful small stones, pods and weeds will add to the beauty. Instructor will provide cord, adhesive, small cutting tools, and a few fresh plant parts collected off site. This workshop is approrpriate for families and adults. Group will meet at Explore Park's Journey's End parking lot.

Nature in the Parks
Spend the morning exploring one of our area parks while we learn about the nature around us. We will take an age appropriate nature walk and follow it up with activities and a craft. After the program, feel free to stay and enjoy the playground and picnic facilities. This program is geared towards Pre-k and Kindergarten, but all youth are welcome to attend. Please dress accordingly for the weather and be prepared for the possibility of getting wet. Pre-registration is required.

Learn all about North America's only marsupial and find out why this fascinating animal deserves our respect and admiration. This program includes a variety of fun hands-on activities, a take home opossum informational booklet, and cast tracks to help you find and track opossums that might be living in your own backyard! What is cute, tiny, lives in your backyard, and is related to lobsters? Roll on down to Explore Park to discover the fascinating world of a terrestrial isopod! Using hands-on investigation, we'll look under rocks and make some new "Roly-Poly" friends! Magnifiers, containers, and stereo-scope available for close observations. Riverwalk Hike
Come for a guided hike along Explore Park’s Riverwalk Trail! This mostly flat trail offers terrific views of the Roanoke River. Along the way we will discuss the river and its ecology, and maybe even a little history! We might even be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a Bald Eagle! Science Outside
Spend the morning outside as we engage in some fun hands-on science activities! The first session will cover stream ecology and the opportunity to test the water quality of one of our streams! Be prepared to get wet! The second session will provide the opportunity to learn about the sun and solar energy and a chance to try your hand at cooking with a solar oven! Lastly, if you want to get dirty then join us for the final session which is all about soil! This program is geared for elementary aged kids, but all youth are welcome. The Secret Lives of Fireflies
Come out to to Explore Park and learn about our favorite summer insect. We'll discuss their secret morse code, mysterious life cycle, and other fun facts as we take some time to observe their flashes and learn how we can become citizen scientist.
