Backyard Birds
Do you ever wonder who is visiting your bird feeder? Join us to find out how to attract, feed, and identify the birds that are visiting your own backyard! Participants will learn about various song birds and woodpeckers, find out what they like to eat, and even make a feeder and birding journal to take home! Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Pre-registration is required.

Owls in Love
Description: “Did you know that most of the owls in Virginia court, mate, and raise their young in the winter? Join us to learn about these fascinating birds of prey and which ones call Roanoke County their home. We will discuss how to identify them, what they eat, and how they feed their young. Participants will dissect an owl pellet, and even meet an owl in person! This program meets at Explore Park’s parking lot B. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Pre-registration is required.

Animals in Winter: Stories and Nature Crafts
Join a Park Naturalist in reading some of her favorite children’s books about animals in winter. We’ll read “The Night Tree”, “Stranger in the Woods” and “The Mitten.” Following story time, we will retell the stories using local animals to make our own Virginia versions! Each book will have its own activity station where participants can create a variety of nature crafts for the animals in their backyard and for their own winter story telling. Learn about Virginia animals, sip hot chocolate and have fun. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Pre-registration is required.
